Bestial Mouths is perhaps one of the most respected modern goth/industrial bands working their way through the scenes with a pivotal force. Featured in a couple of album of the year lists for 2016 due to their brilliant work with Heartless aided by the backing of Cleopatra Records, Bestial Mouths has become a phenomenal force. Just a couple of months I had the pleasure of reviewing and discussing Bestial Mouths and their most recent album Heartless, but it comes as no shock or surprise that their is now a remix companion album to it titled (STILL Heartless).
The overall package is twelve tracks long and features two brand new songs from Bestial Mouths, as well as ten remixes from talents all over the electronic scene. Before I dive into the remixes however, I’d like to touch on the two new Bestial Mouths songs. Those of you looking for more songs in the style of Heartless might be a tad bit disappointed, but there is a newfound style to these tracks. ‘Witchdance’ is less of a song and more of a spoken word operation. Grim ambiance takes over the song as Cerezo shouts and wails, eventually going on and on about the witchdance that is going to occur. The second track ‘HIgh Walls’ has a deep, pulsing beat with ominous backing layered over it. Cerezo speaks over the music with short lines that vary from bursts, to dragged out line, to groans. Either way, if you’re a fan of Bestial Mouths you’ll like the song even if they do fall off the deep end.
As usual with a remix album, this is a grab bag which everyone will pick and choose from as usual. You have names such as Ludovico Technique and Die Krupps on some of the remixes, as well as others such as Shredder, Zanias, The Horrorist, and many more. However, if I had to pick any one remix to put a spotlight on it would be Ludovico Technique’s remix of ‘Worn Skin’. While the original had a mysterious, tribal essence around it Ludovico Technique transformed it into a demonic twin complete with chorus backing and the band’s dark electro appeal.
(STILL) Heartless does exactly what a remix album is supposed to do; it gives listeners some new tracks from the band to indulge in, and presents several different versions of their tracks in a new light. The remixes are decent and interesting interpretations from their original mixes, so boring is one word you cannot use to describe this remix album. Give it a shot and see which mix is your favorite!
Bestial Mouths – Heartless
The haunting new album from avant garde electronic act Bestial Mouths that AV Club have called “chilling, and horrifically entrancing” and Vice declares “makes us want to set pine cones on fire and throw them at the common folk!”
Vocalist Lynette Cerezo absolutely captivates with her extraordinarily mesmerizing lyrics and voice which evokes both Siouxsie Sioux and Diamanda Galas!
Heartless marks a major landmark for the band being the most approachable and fully realized album of their career thus far while also continuing to break new artistic ground!
