Nik Turner’s Hawkwind took the stage at the Rev Room in Little Rock on Saturday, November 9, 2013 and had the crowd in awe as they played their brand of heavy space rock. The band opened with an urgent sounding “Earth Calling” and “Born to Go,” the opening tracks from the classic Hawkwind album, “The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London.” They also played some new music from Turner’s brand new CD, “Space Gypsy,” like the new single “Fallen Angel STS-51-L” in which he’s returned to the classic Hawkwind sound.
The band sounded incredible with Nik Turner on vocals and trading off between the saxophone and flute. Nicky Garrett of the UK Subs put a heavy guitar sound into the band that also featured a drummer, bassist and keyboard player Kephera Moon, whose spacey sounds and look added a lot to the set. There were also lots of flashing colored lights and a spacey video background that provided the right visual.
The show lasted til 1 a.m. as the band played a heavy helping of Hawkwind classics including several songs from “Space Ritual” and other gems like “Children of the Sun” from the 1971 album “X in Search of Space.” For more information on Nik Turner of Hawkwind, visit www.nikturner.com.
At the end of the show, Nik Turner offered an olive branch to former band mate Dave Brock, saying he’d love to get Hawkwind back together again. Examiner talked to Nik Turner after the show about that situation and we’ve posted the video on this page.
