Sons of Hippies wear artifacts of the counterculture on their sleeves, like arbiters of a new generation of inclusive drug cultures and effects pedals.
After playing countless shows and releasing four albums, the Sarasota, Fla.-based psychedelic misfits were signed to Cleopatra Records. As the band’s lead singer Katherine Barnes Kelly notes, getting signed has really “motivated us, it’s been a super-positive experience.”
“We had heard horror stories about getting signed, where the albums might get shelved or lost in a bureaucratic nightmare”, Barnes says. But that wasn’t the case at all with Sons of Hippies, whose new album “Griffons at the Gates of Heaven” was released July 16.
This is their most anticipated release, as the album was mixed by Jack Endino and mastered at Abbey Road Studios. Trippy music videos have already been released from their new album for tracks “Rose” and “Spaceship Ride.”
Things have been getting busier for the band, just getting back from a tour with Nektar. Barnes says that “some of the guys in the band were older than us, but they were really supportive and rocked really hard.”
One of their favorite tour stops thus far was in Lincolnshire, Ill., where they played to a sold-out crowd.
For a band that embraces all things trippy, it makes sense that they were discovered by Porcupine Tree guitarist John Wesley. The British psychedelic progressive band has important roots in Tampa, as Wesley owns Ybor City’s RedRoom Recorders Inc. The recording studio has worked with Andrew W.K., Chad and Jeremy, Underoath, The Format, The Beauvilles and many more.
Wesley contacted the band after one of their shows at New World Brewery, a meeting which resulted in the band building a relationship with Los Angeles-based Cleopatra Records.
In addition to touring for the rest of 2013, Kelly also hopes to play more festivals in the band’s near future. “Our dream tour would be playing a festival and opening for any of our favorite bands, like Band of Skulls, Metric or The Flaming Lips.”
Sons of Hippies will be touring intermittently through the rest of the year; you can check out their tour dates at Sonsofhippies.net
