Nik Turner, founding member of Hawkwind who contributed saxophone, flute and vocals to the group’s first seven albums as well as co-writing some of their most beloved songs, passed away in the evening of November 10th.

His family posted this message earlier today:

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Nik Turner – The Might Thunder Rider, who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday evening. He has moved onto the next phase of his Cosmic Journey, guided by the love of his family, friends and fans.

Turner was simply one of the most creative minds of his generation. His tenure with Hawkwind was just the beginning of his journey to the outer reaches of the rock music universe as Turner would go on to release an astoundingly adventurous and diverse catalog of solo albums as well. His collaborations with everyone from UK Subs guitarist Nicky Garratt to Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger to Todd Rundgren along with Steve Hillage of Gong, Amon Düül II founder John Weinzierl, Die Krupps leader Jürgen Engler and so many more expanded his creative energy and brought new generations of music fans into his audience. Just this year saw the reissue of Turner’s incredible concert
extravaganza, Space Ritual 1994, as both a CD/DVD set as well as a 3LP set, which features guests Helios Creed of Chrome and Psychic TV’s Genesis P-Orridge as well as
Hawkwind alumni Del Dettmar and Alan Powell.

Cleopatra Records would like to offer our deepest condolences to Nik’s family and friends. We always felt Nik to be a part of our family, and we will continue to remember him and honor him as such.

UNWRITTEN LAW SHARE SHORT FILM MUSIC VIDEOS FOR “MAGNETIC” AND “THE HUM”

October 26, 2022 by Cleopatra Records
Unwritten Law

ANNOUNCE 2023 HEADLINING TOUR WITH SUPPORT FROM AUTHORITY ZERO AND ZEBRAHEAD

October 25th, 2022 (San Diego, CA) – Today, SoCal punk legends Unwritten Law share the short film music videos for “Magnetic” and “The Hum,” off their recently released 10th studio album, The Hum. Directed by Joseph Russo, the short film follows the story of a couple, played by Tyler Posey and Tehya Elam, as they enter an alternate reality world known as The Hum. The two become obsessed with the lives they lead in this alternate reality and eventually sacrifice their real life for the fantasy life that will never come to be. The story begins with “Magnetic” and continues with “The Hum.”

Today, the band is also excited to announce The Hum headlining tour for 2023 with support from Authority Zero, Zebrahead, Tyler Posey and Tony Lovato of MEST. Beginning January 19th in Los Angeles, CA at The Roxy, the band will head out on a short run, stopping by in San Diego, CA and Santa Ana, CA before wrapping in Phoenix, AZ at the Crescent Ballroom on January 22nd. See below for more details.

Formed in 1989 in Poway, California, Unwritten Law has been operational in 5 different decades. With a history of lineup changes, this incarnation of the band has been steady since 2014.

Earlier this year, Unwritten Law made their triumphant return with their first new piece of music in over 10 years, their 7th studio album, The Hum. With almost a decade alongside brother and bassist Jonny Grill, founding drummer Wade Youman, and guitarists Chris Lewis and Scotty Mac, the band has never been stronger. With The Hum, the band has brought forth a conceptual work that rings loudly in today’s oversaturated music space. With the help of notable producer Joe Marlett (Blink-182, Queens of the Stone Age and Songs for the Deaf), the record highlights how the band’s distinctive sound and songwriting has matured over these years they’ve been away and further solidifies what made them a
household name among the ‘90s punk explosion.

Bulgarian Electro Duo LUNIKK Earn A Ringing Endorsement From GEOFF DOWNES For Their Version Of VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR!

LUNIKK

Los Angeles, CA – It’s not always the case that cover versions are appreciated by the artists being covered. It’s even rarer to have the original artist offer serious words of praise for another artist’s vision of their work. So when legendary keyboardist Geoff Downes, originally of The Buggles and later with prog rock giants Yes and Asia, offered his praise to Kristina Yordanova and Denny Popov, the duo behind Lunikk, the group was understandably thrilled.

Lunikk’s thoroughly original take on one of Downes’ early hits, The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star,” is being released today as a digital single to all platforms. Downes had this to say upon hearing the Bulgarian duo’s version:

It’s always interesting to hear one of your songs covered by another artist, and I’ve heard many versions of ‘Video’ over the years – some great, some not-so-great. Lunikk’s version however is a very unique spin on the song and very much unlike any other cover. Rather than having a straight beat like the original, it drifts around in a timeless, dreamlike trance, pulling elements from the song that are arranged in a completely different sequence and treated in a musical style with many modern sounds and quite brave overall production. It is a really nice version – I like it.

And what would a single release of “Video Killed The Radio Star” be without an accompanying video! Thankfully, Lunikk also created a lush, atmospheric video that brings their emotional take on the song to life.

Lunikk is an Eastern European experimental pop duo created by vocalist Kristina Yordanova and producer/instrumentalist Denny Popov with influences ranging from Robert Johnson to Pink Floyd and Billie Eilish. After coming together with a shared vision of both music and the world, they built a studio in their apartment and started crafting songs based in the gray of their shared lived experience but delivered in a way that anyone could relate to. Watch for more music coming from the exciting new act in the coming months!

Cleopatra Records Founder on How to Make It as an Indie Label for 30 Years

Cleopatra Records Founder on How to Make It as an Indie Label for 30 Years

September 1, 2022 by Cleopatra Records

Goth, industrial, punk and space-rock fans were the first to discover Los Angeles’ Cleopatra Records in the 1990s. The independent upstart — formed in 1992 by Brian Perera — initially rode the second wave of goth music right into the bins of indie record stores and chains. During that decade, it presciently created electronic music label Hypnotic Records (in 1996) and hair metal imprint Deadline Music (1998) ahead of the EDM explosion and the hard rock revival. Perera noticed the electronic body music movement in Europe expanding into trance and big beat and licensed earlier releases by U.K. stars like Juno Reactor and The Future Sound of London. The business strategy of signing ’80s hard-rock groups for moderate advances with low expectations and then watching the genre revive worked out well.

Cleopatra Records Founder on How to Make It as an Indie Label for 30 Years

Perera’s ability to foresee trends, build catalogs and cater to a wide variety of tastes has kept Cleopatra viable for three decades. In its first 10 years alone, Perera says it averaged 40 to 50 releases per year. Starting out with just himself and his wife, Yvonne, the label grew by selling releases from such bands as Christian Death, Motörhead, The Damned and Kraftwerk to major retailers including Tower Records and Hot Topic, but like other purveyors of physical product, scrambled to survive during the Napster years. “It was kind of a no-man’s land,” Perera recalls. “The record chains and independent stores weren’t buying anything from us.”

Hard Rock Veterans SOiL Pay Respects To Their Musical Influences & Inspirations, Release Hypercharged Version Of HALSEY’s “NIGHTMARE!”

July 27, 2022 by Cleopatra Records
Soil - Play It Forward

Los Angeles, CA – Chicago’s hard hitting rock quartet SOiL are well into their third decade of their incredible music year career. Beginning with their blockbuster major label debut album, 2001’s Scars, which featured two monster hit singles, “Halo” and “Unreal,” SOiL have maintained a devout following by focusing on what they do best, writing and playing some of the most visceral and melodic rock by any modern band on the scene!

Now these veterans are giving their fans a special treat – a new studio album, entitled Play It Forward, consisting of some of the songs that inspired them throughout the years. They’ve already previewed two of the album’s songs, releasing their version of Neil Young’s anthem Rockin’ In The Free World” as well as the Foo Fighters cover “Monkey Wrench,” in honor of drummer Taylor Hawkins. And much more is in store including covers of White Zombie, The Ramones, Leadbelly and more. Today, the band is proud to share an absolutely ripping version of Halsey’s “Nightmare,” accompanied by a suitably sick and twisted music video!

Stream the single

SOiL bassist Tim King adds, “When we were approached by Cleopatra Records with the idea to record a covers album it seemed both exciting and challenging. Outside of the song ‘Black Betty’ we have never really covered any songs before. This gave us a chance to explore some songs we enjoyed growing up on and also taking songs that were never intended to be Hard Rock or Metal and put our own spin on them. It proved to be quite the challenge with our down tuning and figuring out all the different parts and effects in the original versions that you never quite notice during casual listens. The songs we thought were going to be super easy turned out to be the most challenging. In the end we were very happy with the way it all came out and we feel it will give the SOiL fans something to enjoy and have fun with. That was our main goal. To do something fun in the wake of all the horrible things that have been going on in the world.”

Play It Forward will be released on all formats starting August 26. Two album designs were created for the release: a “cassette” design that will be used for the CD packaging and a “skeleton” design that will be used for the first vinyl pressing. A second vinyl pressing featuring the “cassette” artwork will be released in September.

SoCal Punk Heroes UNWRITTEN LAW Return With A Vengeance, Announce New Studio Album & Release New Single!

Los Angeles, CA – It’s been over a decade since the southern California alt-punk pillars Unwritten Law have released a studio album of new, original material. A lot has changed since then, both globally and within the band itself, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the fiery spirit of founding members, vocalist/guitarist Scott Russo and drummer Wade Youman. Together these two bring the UL flame into a new decade with the help of now almost decade-long band members Jonny Grill (bass), Chris Lewis (guitar/vocals) and Scott McLaughlin (guitar/vocals).

With massive guitars and monster, hook-filled choruses, The Hum epitomizes everything that made Unwritten Law a household name among the ‘90s punk rock explosion and a mainstay on the venerated Warped Tour. Time has not only matured the band’s distinctive sound but it has also sharpened the group’s songwriting. Just witness the album’s first single, released today on all digital platforms along with a mesmerizing new video, “Ghosted,” a track whose twist and turns are as numerous and unexpected as they are thrilling.

Ska Heroes BUCK-O-NINE Overcome Obstacles Both Personal And Global To Release New Single & Album!

June 2, 2022 by Cleopatra Records

Los Angeles, CA – No professional touring band has had it easy the last couple of years, but San Diego ska punk icons Buck-O-Nine have had one seriously bumpy ride since the release of their 2019 album FunDayMental. For starters, the worldwide COVID pandemic struck the following year, cancelling the band’s plans to tour in support of the new album. Most recently, much-beloved singer Jon Pebsworth suffered a major cardiac arrest, which led to him being hospitalized and again delaying a planned tour.

Ska Heroes BUCK-O-NINE Overcome Obstacles Both Personal And Global To Release New Single & Album!

But prior to Pebsworth’s brush with disaster, and as the COVID pandemic began to subside, the band struck upon an idea for how to scratch their proverbial performance itch – reunite at their home studio in San Diego, Earthling, and record a live set. After not performing together for 572 days, the band leapt at the chance and the result is 572 Days Later – Live At Earthling, an energetic and joyous live album. The band sounds better than ever and are clearly relishing being able to play together for the first time in nearly two years, kicking out fantastic versions of such fan favorites as “Round Kid,” “Jennifer’s Cold” and “Nineteen” PLUS cuts from FunDayMental!

Check out the brand new, kick ass version of “Round Kid,” a standout track from the group’s massively successful 1997 album Twenty-Eight Teeth, which is being released as a standalone single to all of digital outlets.

The band had this to say about the recording of the new album, “It’s been a weird and unpredictable couple of years. We’re lucky to have each other to lean on and help each other through all the chaos. It hasn’t been easy but we managed to get into the studio and record together. It was super fun! We basically played our live set and got to hang out all in one place for two days!”

Los Angeles Indie Giant CLEOPATRA RECORDS Defy Odds, Celebrate A Stunning THREE DECADES Of Independence!

April 22, 2022 by Cleopatra Records

One of the largest and longest lasting independent record labels in existence, Cleopatra Records, are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. What began in 1992 as a small operation out of the garage of founder Brian Perera has since grown into a family of labels representing one of the most diverse catalogs that encompasses a variety of genres with an emphasis on unique and experimental artists. In a time when most small record labels either die out or get bought by a major, Cleopatra Records has managed to survive and thrive as a privately owned entity deftly navigating the seismic shifts in the industry that have caused so many labels to founder.

Los Angeles Indie Giant CLEOPATRA RECORDS Defy Odds, Celebrate A Stunning THREE DECADES Of Independence!

Primarily known for ushering in the second wave of Gothic and Industrial music with an eclectic roster of artists including Christian Death, Front Line Assembly, Leæther Strip, Rosetta Stone and Corpus Delicti, Cleopatra Records has also been a vital force in promoting underground and British punk rock bands such as The Vibrators, UK Subs, and The Damned as well as ‘80s metal and pop acts like by Quiet Riot, Berlin, Warrant, Missing Persons, Poison’s Bret Michaels and L.A. Guns. In recent years, the Cleopatra label group has expanded in a variety of directions, working with hip hop artists DMX, Vanilla Ice & Onyx as well as iconic artists such as Sly Stone, William Shatner and most recently, the multi-talented Ann-Margret. The label has also become the home label for folk music institution Judy Collins as well as recent Rock Hall Of Fame inductee Todd Rundgren, cult hero Misfits/Danzig singer Glenn Danzig and the new electronic project, Priest, featuring former members of Ghost.

The label will be officially commemorating their anniversary with a special concert event taking place at City Winery in Nashville, TN on May 10. The celebration is to be co-hosted by Cleopatra’s longtime digital distributor, and one of the fastest growing companies in the music industry, The Orchard, who are themselves celebrating an epic 25 years in the biz. The event will feature live performances from Judy Collins herself as well as 3-time Grammy nominee country artist Lorrie Morgan (who has released 2 albums with Cleopatra) and local singer-songwriter Leah Marie Mason.

Industrial Metal Veteran SKOLD Unearths Lost Album From 2002, Previews Opening Track Today!

Skold – Dead God

Los Angeles, CA – “The past is never dead. It’s not even past” proclaimed William Faulkner. If anybody knows the truth of this statement, it’s longtime producer/songwriter/musician Tim Skold. After cutting his teeth with metal bands in his home country of Sweden, Skold came into his own with his eponymous industrial metal project, releasing his self-titled debut album Skold in 1996. The album was extremely well-received appearing in major studio films (Disturbing Behavior, Universal Soldier: The Return) and establishing Skold as a one-of-a-kind talent both in front of and behind the mixing board. On the cusp of completing the highly anticipated follow-up album, Skold was recruited by industrial empresario Marilyn Manson to join his band in 2001, touring and producing several albums and singles up to 2008.

From there Skold picked up where his solo career left off releasing more albums under the Skold moniker, but one album continued to linger: the abandoned follow-up album. Sure, several tracks had been leaked and downloaded innumerable times on the internet (at a time when digital music distribution was a wild wild west of piracy a la Napster) but the album seemed to be a piece of Skold’s past that refused to die, or even stay past. So, the artist got to work on finishing the mythic Dead God album (also known as Disrupting The Orderly Routine Of The Institution), mastering the album from the original full resolution mixes, and is now set to release it on all formats on April 15. This set crackles with turn of the century digital fury and paranoia, sounding as fresh today as it was groundbreaking then!

By way of previewing the album, the lead off track, “Don’t Pray For Me,” is being released to all digital platforms.
