Los Angeles, California: Cleopatra Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to ROCK BOTTOM, an animated feature film produced by Alba Sotorra, written and directed by Maria Trenor and animated by Marta Gil Soriano.
Inspired by the music and life of Robert Wyatt - who co-founded the British psychedelic rock band Soft Machine - Rock Bottom is a self-destructive love story between Bob and Alif, a young couple of artists immersed in the creative whirlwind of the early 70s hippie culture. Drugs will turn a passionate summer into a nightmare in a journey through the themes of Wyatt's music: the euphoria and anguish of artistic creation, the unconscious fascination with drugs, the disenchantment with routine and physical and mental degradation.
A recent review in VARIETY described it as “a trippy rotoscope animation interspersed with experimental segments that tells a story set in the decadent 1970s in both New York and Mallorca” and that “Wyatt’s album ROCK BOTTOM scores a paradise-like beach story overflowing with art, flirtation and recreational drugs. The film deftly weaves the fantasy experiences of Bob and his partner Alif in the two cities, creating a single time and place that could only exist in fiction – or on a really good trip!”
The film has been gathering global rave reviews after its official selections and nominations at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and L’Etrange Festival in France, the Cheltenham International Film Festival in England, the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain and the Marrakech International Film Festival in Morocco amongst other festival selections.
ROCK BOTTOM stars the voices of Laura Casana Pardo (Alif), Fermi Delfa (Bob), Omar Sanchis Gomez (Allen), Roger Riu Gasso (David), Daniel Masalles (Richard) and Lisa Raventos (Kristen).
The rights deal was brokered by Cleopatra Founder and CEO Brian Perera, Tim Yasui VP/GM of Cleopatra Entertainment, and by Arnaud Godart and Laurent Danielou from Loco Films on behalf of the filmmakers.
The film will be released this May 13th, 2025 on VOD Platforms and on Home Entertainment DVD formats.
