Psychic TV - Trip Reset (CD)
"Trip Reset" is the most beautiful, comforting, dreamlike and relaxing album in the psychedelic / jam vein I've ever heard. It's a unique and perfect balance of sugary, breezy vintage sounding pop melodies, avant-garde ambience, improvisational psychedelic tangents, haunting electric viola melodies and playful darkness. The songs are wreathed in watery effects. This is a place where emotions and mental images seem more vivid and real, but rather than being disconcerting as a lot of experimental music can be, a loved-up 'hippie' vibe is somewhat present, albeit presented in the context of a refreshingly new, more otherworldly aesthetic. It scintillates with soft purple hues.
Just as the pop starts to seem a little too saccharine (intentional or not, it seems not to matter after a while), we're treated with a mind bending avant-garde tour de force and hear the howling of cosmic winds in the void ("Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun"). Just as it feels we may drift too far into space, we're brought to Earth with a romantic yet melancholy moonlight reverie ("I Believe What You Said"). The album could have gotten too serious continuing along these lines, but they spice things up with the devilish children's story "Mother Jack". Lady Jaye intones excitedly in her best story time voice about the nicest and most harmless of things, but only to heighten the moment in which the story suddenly turns to surrealism and murder. This sort of diversity continues through the whole record.
The sound of the album alone is what kept me coming back to it, but repeated listenings reveal the depth of the songwriting and lyrics, which are deeply heartfelt, as in everything Genesis P-Orridge creates. However, it can be hard to reach his frequency, as his methods of expression are admittedly odd. He is determined to sing, though his voice contains little conventional beauty. He's gone from making harsh industrial noise to singing his heart out on the simplest, time tested romantic phrases, and expressing his personal thoughts and emotions in an unpretentious way that never reeks of posturing, as his classic persona often did. Here, Psychic TV reminds us that sometimes emotions actually can be simple. His vocals on this album are very expressive, although still somewhat monotone, as if he is afraid to sing too loudly. He hadn't reached the confidence with his voice that he exhibits on the latest 2 albums "Hell Is Invisible" and "Mr. Alien Brain", but I enjoy his vocals on this album immensely.
