Were it possible to imagine hip-hop music manifesting itself in one individual, one supreme example of the art, the culture and the ethics of rap, there is only one artist who come imminently qualified – KRS-One. Born Lawrence Parker, KRS-One left his hometown of Brooklyn at the tender age of 14, taking up residence in a South Bronx homeless shelter. In 1986, he teamed with DJ Scott Larock forming Boogie Down Productions whose debut album Criminal Minded completely blew up the underground hip-hop world with its fierce beats, intense lyrics and sparse production.
After the death of LaRock, KRS struck out on his own, releasing By All Means Necessary, one of the boldest rap records ever recorded. As his message began to spread, KRS became synonymous with his new title, The Teacher and released a string of immensely influential albums, including Edutainment (1989), Return Of The Boom Bap (1993), KRS-One (1995), I Got Next (1997) up to his most recent masterpiece Spiritual Minded (2002).
