Psychopomps - Pro-Death Ravers (CD)

This album breaks no new ground whatsoever. The whole time I was listening, I thought it was outtakes from Ministry's Psalm 69, or maybe Mind Is A Terrible Thing: the machine-gun drums, the guitar work, and distorted vocals are all there. It's a serious Al Jourgenson ripoff. And all I can say is SO WHAT. Most of his post-Psalm 69 output has sucked anyways. I know, because I made the mistake of buying some of it.

Having pointed that out, let me make it very clear that I REALLY LIKE THIS ALBUM. It's loud, fast, aggressive, and doesn't take itself seriously. (Come on, it's called "pro-death ravers"!) Nevertheless, there's some great music on here, and I'm really enjoying it. Aside from Ministry, I'm also reminded of My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult when I listen to this - it's campy and a little over the top. So much of the industrial music I've heard in the last 10 years is pretentious and much too impressed with itself. To my ears, Pro Death Ravers is a return to a simpler, but still aggressive formula. I look forward to listening to more music from the Psychopomps.
